Employers

Q. I am an employer and I need to recruit staff. What do I do?

A. Let us know what vacancies you have and the skills/ attributes of the candidates that you are looking for.

You will probably want to carry on your normal interview and selection process. That's fine. We don't expect our clients to get preferential treatment.

If we have anybody that may be suitable, we may contact you or they will apply for the post in the usual way.

With the client's permission, we may contact you to discuss the barriers to employment that their disability may present and work out an appropriate solution. It is important that jobs are negotiated on the basis of a good business decision by the employer and informed choice by the client.

Q. What happens next?

A. You conduct an interview.

For some people our involvement will have been minimal and we will have simply helped them to get "back on track". Others may need our support and we will help to set up the interview with you and attend as their supporter and advocate.

If the client is successful, we can provide job coaching and ongoing support in their employment with you, for as long as it is needed.

Q. As an employer, can I get financial assistance or wages subsidy?

A. Quite possibly. We will advise you or you can take a look at the Department of Labour's website at www.dol.govt.nz

Q. Are there any charges?

A. No. There is no charge to either the job seeker or the employer.

We are funded by the Ministry of Social Development.

We don't fundraise. We concentrate on providing the services required

A. The same as for any employee carrying out the same or similar tasks.

Q. What about safety in the workplace?

A. We work with the employer and the client to ensure a safe work place under Health and Safety regulations.

Q. Will I have any extra responsibilities?

A. No.  In fact you will have less because your Employment Consultant wiil offer job coaching and ongoing support.

Q. What if there are any issues or problems during the period of employment?

A. Our Employment Consultants can help resolve issues concerning; workplace relationships; transport; coordination with other agencies; liaising with family members and caregivers.

Q. What if the worker proves to be unsuitable?

A. You should follow the same procedures as you would for any other employee and keep in contact with us. We may be able to resolve any issues.
